Wells-next-the-Sea

Wells-next-the-Sea sits on the edge of the North Norfolk coast, here you can see the most stunning views of big blue skies and sunsets which seem to stretch for miles and quaint old fashion beach huts painted in bright clours, sandy beaches and pine woods.

Wells is one of the most loveliest seaside towns on the east Coast, with its quaint narrow streets, tiny yards and characteristic buildings. Small shops are dotted along the quay & along Staithe Street, selling everything from fish n' chips,  ice cream, stripy rock, bucket and spades, fresh produce, books, clothes , shoes & trendy gifts.

It also boasts of a very useful library, with internet connection.  There's also a bank,  a post office, dentist, doctors and a cottage hospital. The down side is that Wells no longer has a petrol station, the nearest one is Burnham Market about six miles away or Blakeney about the same,  however the upside is both villages are well worth a visit!!

From the quay, and along the harbour, local  fishermen can be seen bringing home their daily catch of crabs & fish. Leisure boats are moored against pontoons, and  sailing boats can be seen in full sail on a breezy day.  On the quay children dangle their legs over the side as they catch ‘gillies‘ small crabs, and (no-one ever falls in)!!  Families can walk to the beach, use their car or have a bit of fun by taking a  ride on the minaiture rail train which runs every half hour.  Whilst waiting for the train, don't miss the  latest play feature on the Playing Field, which is a fantastic large wooden play boat called the  Bounty, she was made and installed by  a local volunteer group the Friends of the Beach Road Playing Field, Rays boat building skills went into building her,  Pirate Day is a must for the kids!!

The Buttlands is a lovely open village green, lined with Lime trees,  Georgian & Victorian Houses,  two fairly up market pubs serve great ales & good home made food, the other pubs & restaurants within Wells support good  local produce. The Bowling Green pub is just one of them, which has great character and friendly management.

What Holiday Guide readers voted Wells as the second best holiday destination in Britain, for its local community spirit & friendliness, and if you have seen Kingdom, that about wraps it up!
The area is like a magnet, we find that visitors return  year upon year, never tiring of Wells & its friendliness.

Visiting  Wells out of season is a must, the lovely high tides that cover the marshes are truly amazing. Skeins of geese in their thousands can be seen & heard flying over to roost, needless to say Wells really is the perfect base for bird watchers & walkers.  Holkam Bay reserve, can easily be reached by foot, whilst you can always use your car to travel a short distance to Titchwell & Cley nature reserves.
